Plot Summary
The film follows the life of Amiran (Rekha), who is kidnapped as a young girl from her home in Faizabad by a criminal named Dilawar Khan (Vishwajeet Pradhan), who seeks revenge against her father for testifying against him in court. Dilawar sells Amiran to Khanum Jaan (Shaukat Kaifi), the madam of a brothel in Lucknow, where she is renamed Umrao Jaan. She is trained in classical music, dance, poetry, and etiquette by Khanum Jaan and her associates. She also befriends Gauhar Mirza (Puru Raaj Kumar), the illegitimate son of a local nawab.
As Umrao grows up, she becomes a renowned courtesan who attracts many wealthy and influential patrons. She falls in love with Nawab Sultan (Farooq Shaikh), who reciprocates her feelings but is forced to marry another woman by his family. Umrao is heartbroken and seeks solace in Faiz Ali (Raj Babbar), a dashing bandit who persuades her to elope with him. However, Faiz Ali is captured by the British and Umrao is left alone in the wilderness. She returns to Lucknow, where she finds out that her brothel has been raided and Khanum Jaan has been arrested. She also learns that Nawab Sultan has lost his wealth and status due to the revolt of 1857 and is now living in poverty.
Umrao decides to visit her hometown of Faizabad, hoping to reunite with her family. She meets her brother, who is now a successful lawyer, but he rejects her and insults her for being a courtesan. Umrao is devastated and realizes that she has no place to call home.
